OmniAir Announces Inaugural V2X Hackathon

News
March 4, 2026

OmniAir Consortium® is hosting the inaugural OmniAir Hackathon, focused on Misbehavior Detection and Prevention in connected vehicles and infrastructure. The event will take place in conjunction with the OmniAir Maryland Plugfest during the week of June 1–5 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.

Teams of graduate and undergraduate students from accredited universities, with experience or interest in vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, are invited to participate. The OmniAir Hackathon is sponsored by OmniTrust, formerly INTEGRITY Security Services (ISS), a global leader in end-to-end embedded cybersecurity solutions.

As we move toward the scaled, nationwide deployment of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technologies, ensuring the security of these systems is paramount. V2X communications rely on trusted, standards-compliant messages to deliver safety and mobility benefits. The ability to detect and mitigate misbehavior in V2X systems is critical. This hackathon challenges students to demonstrate how and why that can happen and to propose practical countermeasures that strengthen system resilience.

What Makes This Unique?

Participants will work within standards such as SAE J2735 and security frameworks such as IEEE 1609.2 to expose behavioral gaps beyond those addressed by certificate validation and message authenticity.

Students will receive direct mentorship from leading V2X testing and security experts from around the world. This provides participants with rare access to nationally recognized V2X security and transportation research professionals.

Who is Participating?

Student teams are currently being assembled from:

  • Johns Hopkins University
  • University of Maryland
  • Morgan State University
  • University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

Additional universities are invited to participate and help shape the future of V2X system resilience.

Why Participate?

  • Gain hands-on experience with real-world V2X systems
  • Present to an industry and government audience
  • Contribute to improving the safety and trustworthiness of national connected vehicle deployments
  • Build relationships with leading security and transportation professionals
