OmniAir Consortium, the world’s leading industry association promoting interoperability and certification for connected vehicles, tolling, and intelligent transportation systems announces Toyota Motor North America as its newest member.

In an April 2018 press release, Toyota announced their goal to deploy vehicle-to-everything (V2X) Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) systems on vehicles sold in the United States starting in 2021; and made the following statement: “Imagine a world where vehicles could ‘talk’ to each other and to the surrounding environment to help keep their drivers and their passengers safe.”

Within one month of their release, Toyota no longer has to imagine a world were vehicles can ‘talk’ to each other. OmniAir and its members have proven V2X devices are capable of passing OmniAir’s rigorous certification release 1, a program focused on delivering trusted communication devices.

“Toyota’s forward-thinking approach and dedication to the advancement of vehicle-to-everything technology will help to ensure the safety of millions of people,” said Jason Conley, Executive Director of OmniAir Consortium. “By joining OmniAir and contributing to its mission, Toyota is one step closer to realizing their vision of a future with zero fatalities from crashes, better traffic flow, and less congestion.”

OmniAir has moved well beyond the initial steps of talking about national interoperability and has developed a proven and repeatable third-party certification program that promotes national and global interoperability of V2X devices. This program helps to ensure basic safety messages are communicated between manned, automated and autonomous vehicles, and transportation infrastructure.
