OmniAir Consortium® has implemented the first mandatory tests for misbehavior detection and reporting in cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) equipment. The new test plan, approved last week, will be required for all OmniAir Certified® onboard units (OBUs) and roadside units (RSUs).
Misbehavior detection (MBD) is a critically important element of securing connected vehicle communications. It focuses on the potential problem of V2X radios transmitting bad data, either willfully or unintentionally. This misbehavior can stem from software glitches, hardware failures, or even deliberate attacks. A misbehavior detection mechanism can help to minimize the risks of inaccurate data and to ensure that potentially malicious users can be removed from the V2X ecosystem.
“OmniAir® is committed to ensuring the safety and security of connected vehicle communications,” said Jason Conley, Executive Director of OmniAir. “Testing all V2X devices for misbehavior detection and reporting is necessary to address a critical vulnerability that, if unchecked, could have cascading impacts on transportation safety and security.”
The newly approved test document, 763Av1.0-OA-TSS&TP-3287, tests devices for misbehavior detection and reporting, per the SAE J3287 standard.
Dr. Anthony Lopez of Qualcomm led the tiger team to draft the test cases, as part of OmniAir's Cybersecurity Working Group, chaired by Dr. Brian Romansky of OmniTrust. The goal was to develop standardized, interoperable testing procedures to support evolving C-V2X security requirements.
In June, at the OmniAir Maryland Plugfest at Johns Hopkins University, a team of OmniAir members successfully demonstrated the first full cycle: a misbehaving device was detected, reported, and then unable to sign after updating its own Certificate Revocation List (CRL). The event also hosted a student hackathon, with teams from universities across North America demonstrating innovative solutions for C-V2X misbehavior detection and mitigation.
