“Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s embrace of new technologies to facilitate transportation safety and mobility is impressive” said Jason Conley, Executive Director of OmniAir Consortium. “Their expertise and experience will OmniAir® to advance testing and certification programs that meet the needs of tolling agencies and other infrastructure owner-operators across the nation.”
The Pennsylvania Turnpike (PA Turnpike) spans more than 565 miles, making it the nation’s second longest toll road, and an essential part of the northeastern transportation corridor. The Turnpike has led the way in implementing all-electronic tolling, enhancing roadway safety, and partnering with PennDOT and regional agencies to deploy connected vehicle infrastructure and smart corridor projects. These efforts are improving traffic management, increasing safety, and preparing Pennsylvania’s highways for the future of connected and automated mobility.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is also partnering with PennDOT, Carnegie Mellon University, and other organizations to advance PennSTART, a-state-of-the-art training and testing facility to address the transportation safety and operational needs of Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic Region. The facility will benefit emergency responders, transportation organizations, and research institutions. PennSTART will address safety training and research needs in six key areas: traffic incident management (TIM); tolling and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technology; work zones; commercial vehicles; transit vehicles; and connected and automated vehicles.
