OmniAir’s Sensor Working Group Gains Momentum

What started as a single listening session is now one of OmniAir’s fastest-growing initiatives.

OmniAir Consortium® has launched a new Sensor Working Group, drawing an average of 60+ participants per meeting from across the transportation ecosystem. From sensor developers to public agencies, the industry is showing up and leaning in.

The effort was sparked by a listening session led by Nick Hegemier of DriveOhio, where stakeholders aligned around a clear need: better frameworks for integrating and validating sensors being used to support connected vehicle applications.

Why It Matters

Connected intersections depend on more than V2X. Sensors are the foundation for real-time awareness.

Radar, LiDAR, video, infrared, and other technologies each play a role. Together, they enable:

  • Safer detection of pedestrians and cyclists
  • Smarter traffic flow and queue management
  • Improved intersection safety through the delivery of sensor data to support vehicle conflict detection
  • More adaptive and efficient signal operations

The challenge is not just deploying sensors. It ensures they work together to build a level of accuracy needed to achieve the safety that connected vehicle technology promises.

From Talk to Action

The response was immediate. The new working group is already moving forward with:

  • Defining performance and interoperability requirements
  • Identifying gaps in today’s standards
  • Utilizing real-world deployment experience as inputs to the effort

What’s Next

This is the first step toward a broader goal: a certification program for sensors and sensor systems.

As transportation systems rely more heavily on sensor data to support real-time safety, accuracy and reliability are not optional. They are foundational.

With strong participation and growing momentum, OmniAir is helping the industry move faster toward trusted, testable, and scalable sensor deployments.
