New OmniAir Program to Support Conneted Intersections
OmniAir Consortium®, the leading industry association promoting interoperability and certification for ITS, tolling, and connected vehicles, launched an Infrastructure to Roadside Unit Interface Certification (IRSUIF) program scope. The program scope was approved by the OmniAir® Board of Directors, at their meeting in Austin, Texas in June. The program addresses critical communications links between devices at connected intersections and the Connected Vehicle Roadside Unit (RSU).
The OmniAir IRSUIF conformity assessment program will verify an infrastructure device at the roadside, or a traffic management center (TMC) has met industry consensus on protocol, interoperability, minimum performance, and testing requirements. This program will verify the conformance of infrastructure devices communicating with connected vehicle Road-Side Units (RSUs) to industry-defined, standards-based requirements.
“This program will expand OmniAir certification beyond the RSU and OBU to support information sharing to facilitate applications that enhance safety for virtually all road users,” said Jason Conley, Executive Director of OmniAir.
This program will meet the certification needs of government transportation entities, connected vehicle technology implementers, and connected vehicle product manufacturers.
The certification program provides confidence that messages sent from an infrastructure device to an RSU are secured, either through signed messages or by providing messages through a secure connection. This ensures in-vehicle applications can trust the data they receive.

OmniAir Qualifies Spirent TTsuite-WAVE-LTEV CV2X Test System
OmniAir Consortium®, the leading industry association promoting interoperability and certification for ITS, tolling, and connected vehicles, announces the Spirent, TTsuite-WAVE-LTEV has earned OmniAir Qualified Test Equipment (OQTE) status.
The TTsuite-WAVE-LTEV is a test solution for testing C-V2X protocol over a C-V2X interface that contains a set of interoperable scripts for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE) standards used in North America, Korea, and Taiwan. Conformance testing of C-V2X devices is conducted through OmniAir’s Test Control Interface (TCIv3).
Certification is based on the following standards and OmniAir test cases:
- 763-OA – IEEE 1609.2 Security Services for Applications and Management Messages
- 765-OA – IEEE 1609.3 Network Services
- 767-OA – SAE J2945/1 Basic Safety Messages (BSM) for V2V Safety Communications
The test equipment will validate OmniAir-developed test cases for compliance of C-V2X devices, and the solution helps ensure cross-vendor interoperability of C-V2X devices supporting those standards.
“Spirent earning OQTE status for their TTsuite-WAVE-LTEV will allow OmniAir Authorized Test Laboratories to conduct automated testing of the full stack for CV2X devices, said Jason Conley, Executive Director. “Automated testing provides a high level of confidence and repeatability and will speed up the time needed to conduct certification testing of C-V2X devices vs. manually. ”
This solution supported two test stations at last month’s OmniAir Ann Arbor Plugfest that ran tests for nearly a dozen C-V2X devices over the week.
OmniAir Certification for V2X devices assures automotive OEMs, Tier One suppliers, and deploying agencies that OmniAir Certified devices conform to industry standards and meet minimum performance and interoperability requirements.
OmniAir’s OQTE program assesses and qualifies test equipment, systems, and tools used in the industry. Only those test systems and equipment that successfully pass OmniAir’s audit process to become a qualified product and are eligible for use by OmniAir Authorized Test Laboratories for certification testing.
OmniAir Consortium certified devices, qualified test equipment/tools, and authorized test laboratories, including the TTsuite-WAVE-LTEV, are located in our certified products catalog at www.omniair.org/certified-products/.

Ann Arbor Plugfest Recap
OmniAir hosted one of our most successful Plugfests at the University of Michigan’s Mcity Test Facility in Ann Arbor. Our event would not have been as successful without the generous financial support of INTEGRITY Security Services (ISS) as our event’s primary sponsor!
The week-long testing event brought together leading C-V2X device manufacturers, test laboratories, and test equipment providers from Europe, Asia, and North America. Over a dozen test stations evaluated 18 unique C-V2X On-Board Units (OBU), Roadside Units (RSU), and modules from device manufacturers.
“OmniAir Plugfests allow C-V2X vendors to learn from each other and test in an open and cooperative environment, improving industry performance across the board,” said Jason Conley, OmniAir’s Executive Director. “We appreciate the over 100 engineers and transportation professionals that participated making this the best OmniAir Plugfest yet!”
Our members took advantage of bench conformance, 1609.2 security, multi-root, SCMS certificate provisioning, and interoperability testing. In addition, there were Physical layers, J3161/1 Radio, 1609.3, J2735 WSMs, J2945/1 BSMs, RSU 4.1, and SNMP.
For field testing, there were six V2X safety applications: Red Light Violation Warning (RLVW), Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP), Reduced Speed Zone (RSZ), Lane Closure Warning (LCW), Curve Speed Warning (CSW), and Emergency Electronic Brake Light, (EEBL). In addition to application testing, there was GNSS location accuracy and verification.
OmniAir members participating in the Plugfest meet with principal stakeholders from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), including Dr. Henry Liu, Director of the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation, and Mary Lynn Buonarosa, Program Manager at UMTRI. The presentation provided details on the upcoming ATCMTD Smart Intersections Project and their technology needs and expectations to help drive CV2X technology deploymnets.
OmniAir also hosted a “VIP Day” that attracted over 50 guests, despite the pouring rain, to come and see testing first-hand and witness live technology demos by SPOKE, Audi, Commsignia, and Rohde & Schwarz. This event drew attendees from Ford, Toyota, GM, Audi, Verizon, Bosch, Macomb County, MDOT, the City of Ann Arbor, local bicycling associations, and media.
OmniAir Plugfests are an excellent opportunity to determine the readiness of the V2X industry and to prepare devices, test equipment, and test laboratories for our certification, qualification, and authorization programs. OmniAir certification is successful because we certify RSU and OBU devices with OmniAir Qualified test systems used by laboratories, OATLs, that OmniAir has audited and authorized to provide third-party validation testing.
There is no substitute for OmniAir’s C-V2X certification program. Our C-V2X device certification program is comprehensive and covers radio functionality, the V2X stack, message compliance protocols, radio integration into a device, applications, location accuracy, and device security. End users can be assured that an OmniAir certified device conforms to industry standards and is interoperable.
For those interested in learning more about the readiness of the C-V2X market, OmniAir will present aggregated and anonymized test results from the OmniAir Ann Arbor Plugfest during our next monthly membership meeting scheduled for Thursday, June 23.
For those that attended the Plugfest or VIP Day and you have feedback on how we can make improvements to our events, please send a note, or call Ryan Hall. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
