At last month’s OmniAir Plugfest @ Mcity in Ann Arbor, Michigan OmniAir Consortium® members successfully tested the interoperability of Security Credential Management Systems (SCMS). For the first time, SCMS providers from across Europe, Asia, and North America participated in the SCMS interoperability testing using new mandatory security tests developed by OmniAir® and its members.
Leading PKI security providers for the IoT and connected vehicle industry, Autocrypt, INTEGRITY Security Services, Microsec, and SAESOL TECH, demonstrated registration of C-V2X devices, execution of a series of certificate request procedures, and issuance of certificates using the interfaces in accordance with the IEEE 1609.2.1 security standard.
These tests were developed by OmniAir’s Cybersecurity Working Group, representing a cross-section of the V2X industry, cybersecurity experts, test laboratories, and deploying agencies.
OBU and RSU devices that leverage chipsets and software from multiple vendors are adopting the 1609.2.1 standard, paving the way for commercial deployments that leverage shared trust amongst mutually verified messages signed by each SCMS provider.

SCMS Manager recently issued a test Certificate Trust List (CTL) as the accepted mechanism for establishing trust with multiple SCMS systems and was available during last month’s OmniAir Plugfest to support interoperability. It leveraged root certificates from the four SCMS providers to ensure shared trust.
This milestone demonstrates the industry’s commitment to ensuring scalable, secure, and interoperable devices in a C-V2X ecosystem. The Plugfest demonstrated the promise of how 1609.2.1-based devices can deliver roadside safety and traffic efficiency. The successful message signing and verification based on 1609.2.1 marks a progression in connected technologies with learnings that can shape future communication technologies.
