The Burlington County Bridge Commission is the latest public agency to join OmniAir Consortium®. The Burlington County Bridge Commission is responsible for the operation and maintenance of several bridges in Burlington County, New Jersey, just across the Delaware River.

The Commission is one of 39 member agencies that make up the larger E-ZPass Interagency Group that operates within 17 states. E-ZPass is an electronic toll collection system used on most tolled roads, bridges, and tunnels in the Midwestern and Eastern United States, as far south as Florida and as far west as Illinois.

“The Commission has taken a leadership role on behalf of the E-ZPass Group within OmniAir to develop and launch OmniAir’s Multi-Protocol Tolling Device Certification Program said,” Stan Ozalis, Director of Information Technology and ETC for the Burlington County Bridge Commission. “This work goes hand in hand with our mission to provide Burlington County residents, commuters and visitors with safe, accessible and affordable bridges, roads and facilities.”

“We are excited to have Burlington County Bridge Commission as our newest member from the tolling community, said Jason Conley, Executive Director of OmniAir Consortium.  “The Commission’s leadership role in OmniAir will help bring us one step closer to realizing the goal of national toll interoperability.”

OmniAir’s Tolling and Emerging Payment Technologies Working Group brings together the nation’s leading tolling experts from government and industry to develop and advance OmniAir’s testing & certification programs for tolling technologies. Multi-Protocol Tolling Device Certification involves three regional, single, standalone RFID protocols (6B, 6C & TDM).

Multi-protocol tags and readers, which incorporate three regional, single, standalone RFID protocols (6B, 6C & TDM), are becoming increasingly popular in the market.  The development of a certification program for multi-protocol devices is top priority for OmniAir. This new certification program is expected to launch in mid-2020.

If your organization is interested in contributing to the development of this important new certifiction program for tolling, please contact Kate Oldham, Senior Director of Meetings & Membership.

OmniAir Consortium®, the leading industry association promoting certification and interoperability for ITS, tolling, and Connected Vehicles, has announced four major initiatives for 2019.  In addition to OmniAir’s ongoing work to advance its existing DSRC-V2X and RFID tolling certification programs, the Consortium will launch several large initiatives in the coming year:

  • International Expansion – OmniAir®is taking steps to expand its certification programs to international markets. OmniAir has executed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with ITS Korea and China ITS Industry Alliance to expand OmniAir Certification into these markets. OmniAir will also host its first Plugfests outside of the United States, beginning in May with a Plugfest in the Montreal region, in cooperation with Transport Canada and Propulsion Quebec. Planning is also underway for future OmniAir V2X testing events in Europe and in Asia.
  • V2X Security – OmniAir has kicked off its contract with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on Next Generation V2X Certification. The focus of the contract will be to develop new V2X security test cases, to review new proposed test cases for Roadside Units (RSUs), and to liaise with Standards Development Organizations (SDOs). Much of this activity will build on the existing work of OmniAir’s Cybersecurity Working Group, which developed new test cases for OmniAir’s most recent Plugfest.
  • Multi-Protocol Tolling Certification – OmniAir’s tolling certification program, first launched in 2012, is limited to certification of single-protocol RFID tolling devices. In order to meet the certification needs for the growing market of multi-protocol tags and readers, OmniAir is launching an initiative to develop a multi-protocol certification program for tolling devices using 6C, TDM, and SeGo protocols. This will build on OmniAir’s work on National Toll Interoperability (NIOP) testing-and will kick off with a workshop in February.
  • C-V2X Certification – OmniAir Consortium will initiate development of a certification program for cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) devices.  Work will focus on interoperability and certification of the application layers for C-V2X direct communication (3GPP Rel. 14 PC5 Mode 4) and will build on OmniAir’s years of work in developing its Connected Vehicle Conformity Assessment program for DSRC. OmniAir members, including Qualcomm, Spirent, Commsignia, and 7Layers conducted a successful demonstration of C-V2X testing at the OmniAir Texas Plugfest.  OmniAir will develop this certification program in cooperation with relevant stakeholder organizations.

“OmniAir has had a very successful 2018—adding 20 new members, four new OmniAir Authorized Test Laboratories, and our first OmniAir Certified DSRC On-Board Units (OBUs) and Roadside Units (RSUs)” said Jason Conley, Executive Director of OmniAir.  “These exciting initiatives will accelerate OmniAir’s momentum—offering our members additional services and expanding OmniAir Certification to new markets around the world.”

The announcement came earlier this week at OmniAir’s Annual Meeting, hosted at the offices of the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority.   The two-day event, featured Membership and Board of Directors meetings, and included live demonstrations of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Tampa Connected Vehicle Pilot.
