The upcoming OmniAir Plugfest at Mcity May 13-17, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is focused on enhancing safety on our roads, and we are offering over a dozen diverse array of V2X safety applications.  Among these critical applications, freeway and intersection scenarios will be scrutinized throughout the week.

Applications Overview: Each application plays a vital role in fortifying road safety:

“Application testing is the cornerstone of ensuring the reliability, safety and trust of V2X technologies,” said Jason Conley, Executive Director of OmniAir Consortium. “At OmniAir, we take pride in our commitment to supporting V2X safety applications, as it aligns with our mission of facilitating the national deployment of cutting-edge solutions.”

In moments of sudden braking, this application swiftly transmits warnings to trailing vehicles, offering advanced notice, and potentially averting rear-end collisions.

FCW represents a cornerstone in freeway safety by leveraging V2X communication; it acts as a vigilant guardian, alerting drivers to impending front-end collisions and enabling timely intervention to prevent accidents.

The blind Spot Warning system provides indispensable assistance to drivers. Detecting vehicles in blind spots enhances situational awareness and reduces the risk of side collisions, fostering safer travel.

As vehicles approach intersections, this application issues timely warnings to drivers, reducing the likelihood of red-light violations and subsequent collisions.

Safety is paramount within the dynamic environment of work zones. The Reduce Speed, Work Zone application dynamically adjusts speed recommendations, ensuring safe passage through construction areas and minimizing the risk of accidents.

Navigating lane closures can be confusing, but the Lane Closure Warning system offers drivers clarity and safety. This application alerts drivers to upcoming lane closures, enabling them to confidently make informed decisions and navigate through changing traffic patterns.

The Vehicle Preemption system takes proactive measures to enhance intersection safety. Providing preemptive warnings and priority to emergency vehicles streamlines traffic flow and minimizes the potential for collisions at intersections.

Instantaneous and decisive, the Wrong Way Driver Detection system swiftly identifies vehicles traveling in the wrong direction. Through vehicle receipt of MAP messages the vehicle is able to determine its location within the roadway and issue the driver an alert that they are traveling in the wrong direction based on their location.

Collaboration and interoperability are the cornerstones of V2X technology, and the CAV/USDOT MAP Training application reinforces these principles. Facilitating training sessions informed by past Plugfest experiences ensures stakeholders are equipped to integrate Cooperative Automated Vehicles and USDOT mapping protocols seamlessly, advancing the safety and efficiency of V2X systems.

Positioned strategically to assess threats and guide movement, this application suite epitomizes intersection safety by offering real-time guidance to drivers and pedestrians, enhancing safety in complex traffic dynamics.

*Pedestrian in Crosswalk Warning: Currently in development, this application highlights our commitment to pedestrian safety. While we work on implementing camera technology, our backup plan involves RSU vendors broadcasting Personal Safety Messages (PSM) to ensure a comprehensive approach to intersection safety.

OmniAir Plugfests exemplifies the collaborative spirit driving our industry forward, with all participants striving towards a common goal: safer roads for all. However, none of this progress would be possible without the active participation of RSU and OBO vendors in testing. Their involvement is not only crucial but indispensable in refining these technologies to ensure successful deployments that end-users can trust. We hope all V2X stakeholders join us in this critical time, knowing that together, we can pave the way for a future where road travel is not only connected but inherently safer for all.
