OmniAir Consortium®, the leading industry association promoting interoperability and certification for ITS, tolling, and connected vehicles, announces its newest Executive Member, the North Carolina Turnpike Authority.

Since 2002, the Turnpike Authority has worked to deliver toll facilities to help give drivers more choices in how they reach critical destinations, These transportation options also reduce congestion along heavily traveled routes and provide an additional revenue stream for building new commuter routes.

The Turnpike Authority has been at the leading edge of implementing new toll collection technologies, and was the first agency in the United States to read three transponder protocols in a tolling environment. NCTA’s Executive Director, J.J. Eden, was a founder of the Interagency Group, better known for the E-ZPass system.  He also serves as President & CEO of the Alliance for Toll Interoperability, a non-profit.

With a rapidly growing population and roadways becoming increasingly congested, traditional road-building funds are stretched thin. As a result, tolls are becoming an increasingly important solution to financing new road construction projects in North Carolina. The Turnpike Authority has six projects under development, which would add 64-miles of open-road tolling allowing more options for commuters.

“North Carolina is a recognized leader in adopting new technologies and innovative approaches to transportation challenges,” said OmniAir Consortium Executive Director Jason Conley. “We are excited to have the Tolling Authority as OmniAir’s newest member, helping to advance our mission.”
