Although winter is in full swing, it is not too early to look forward to OmniAir’s spring V2X Plugfest in Detroit, Michigan. Intertek is hosting The Motor City Plugfest at their Plymouth, MI facility May 7-11. In addition to bench testing with Intertek, field testing will take place at the American Center for Mobility‘s Willow Run test track.
What to Expect
The week starts off with a half-day policy workshop featuring guest speakers from the automotive, technology, security and transportation sectors; followed by a welcome reception.
Bench testing at Intertek will be conducted in separate spaces allowing device makers and test providers a higher level of privacy. There will be individual test sessions, group interoperability, and parallel learning sessions.
Field Testing at the American Center for Mobility’s site comes with a number of desirable features Plugfest participants will appreciate including double overpasses, a railroad crossing, and a highway loop to test at sustained highway speeds. Testing can occur during all four seasons, day and night, in sun, rain, ice, and snow.
Do you have OmniAir Certification? If so, you still have several reasons to participate. There are a few new test procedures for you and those that are close to certification.
- SAE J2945.1 V-V BSMs Minimum Performance
- Message Interoperability
- High precision location based testing
- SCMS Testing
- IEEE 802.11p Physical Layer
- IEEE 1609.2 Security/Certificates
- IEEE 1609.3 Network (including WSA)
- IEEE 1609.4 Multi-Channel Operations

OmniAir Hires Director of Member Services
As our association continues to grow and evolve we look for ways to provide our members with a greater level of service and value. I am pleased to announce we were able to bring onboard a highly talented and driven associate to head up our member services division, Katherine Oldham. I would be remiss, if I fail to mention she prefers Kate or Katie. Kate started her new position as Director of Member Services last week and I hope you can make her acquaintance at our next membership meeting call, January 25.
Prior to joining OmniAir, Kate was the Project Manager for the International Biometrics + Identity Association (IBIA) headquartered in Washington, D.C. where she managed the association’s working groups, coordinated events and maintained positive relationships with its members.
Kate earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Temple University and received a master’s degree in Political Management from the George Washington University, graduating with distinguished honors from both Universities. She is a member of the Center City Proprietors Association and the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia.
Kate resides outside of Philadelphia with her family, where she is active in the animal welfare community, fostering and volunteering with local animal rescues.
I encourage each of you to reach out to Kate and make an introduction, Kate can be reached at koldham@omniair.org.

Year End Review and New Year’s Update
In many ways, 2017 was a year of firsts for OmniAir Consortium®. We launched the world’s first DSRC-V2X Certification Program. We announced our first OmniAir Qualified Test Equipment, and the first OmniAir Authorized Test Laboratory for V2X.
In October, we held the first ever OmniAir Connected Vehicle Plugfest in Silicon Valley and our first Connected Vehicle Workshop in San Francisco. We ended the year with a very successful Annual Meeting at New York City, featuring expert speakers in V2X, tolling, road user charging, and the sharing economy.
Over the past year, OmniAir’s membership has grown by over 45%–with the addition of technology leaders such as Qualcomm, NXP, LG Electronics, Delphi, DENSO, SiriusXM, Siemens, AECOM, and many more.
2018 promises to be an even more exciting year, with ample opportunity for members to get engaged! Here are just a few ways to take advantage of your membership:
This month, we will complete testing on our first OmniAir Certified DSRC-V2X devices. OmniAir Consortium offers RFID-tolling and DSRC-V2X device certification only to members.
Also in January, we will launch OmniAir’s Cybersecurity Working Group. This Working Group will be responsible for developing requirements and specifications for device security testing, for incorporation into OmniAir’s certification programs.
OmniAir’s Certification and Technical Working Groups continue to meet on a bi-weekly basis, and are focused on developing specifications for DSRC-V2X Release 2, as well as updating OmniAir’s policies on certification, recertification, and lab authorization. Members are encouraged to participate.
Planning is already underway for OmniAir’s Motor City Plugfest, scheduled for the week of May 7. This V2X Plugfest, hosted by OmniAir member Intertek at their facilities in Plymouth, MI, will offer improvements from our first Plugfest, including increased number conformance testing sessions, more space, better connectivity, more interoperability testing, and extensive field testing. Participation will be exclusive to OmniAir members.
Throughout the course of the year, OmniAir is planning a series of workshops, webinars, and outreach opportunities to help our members stay on top of the latest regulatory and technical developments impacting your organization.
To learn more about how you can become more involved, and or how your organization can get the most out of its OmniAir membership, please contact Jason Conley, Executive Director, OmniAir Consortium at jconley@omniair.org.

Qualcomm Joins OmniAir
OmniAir Consortium®, the global leader in vehicle-to-everything (V2X) certification, announces our newest member – Qualcomm. OmniAir has seen a spike in high-profile corporations join OmniAir since the official launch of our V2X certification program in October. From Tier 1 automotive giant DENSO, international testing house TÜV SÜD, and now one of the world’s largest and most recognized chipset makers and V2X proponents – Qualcomm.
“Having corporations like Qualcomm join your association at an executive level and serve on the board sends a strong market signal that OmniAir is the premier, independent, third-party certification body for V2X technology,” said Jason Conley, Executive Director at OmniAir.
“As a key provider of wireless solutions for automotive, Qualcomm Technologies is honored to participate in OmniAir’s leading efforts for certification of V2X systems,” said Jim Lansford, Director, Technical Standards at Qualcomm. “Qualcomm Technologies has been at the forefront of inventing and commercializing V2X communication, and we are honored to work with key automotive and technology stakeholders towards 5G C-V2X. We are pleased and committed to working with OmniAir to quickly commercialize dependable and robust connected vehicle technology.”
OmniAir, through third-party testing and certification, is promoting conformance and interoperability for these life-critical safety devices. Trusted device communications are the key to national deployment. End users, such as state departments of transportation and automotive companies want assurances that the technology they are deploying are truly interoperable and will work with all certified devices regardless of manufacturer.
