OmniAir Consortium® the leading industry association promoting interoperability and certification for ITS, tolling, and Connected Vehicles formally announces the launch of the world’s first certification program for Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) based devices.

With the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) decision to reassign a portion (30 MHz) of the 5.9 GHz band for use by C-V2X, there is a growing market demand for trusted C-V2X communications devices.

OmniAir’s new LTE-V2X Certification Program utilizes independent, third-party testing and certification for C-V2X (LTE-V2X PC5) based Roadside Units (RSU) and On-Board Units (OBU), as well as Dual Use RSUs that include both Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) and LTE-V2X capabilities.

OmniAir Certification employs validated test cases, qualified test equipment and a network of accredited test laboratories.  OmniAir Certified® devices conform to published industry standards and meet minimal interoperability and security requirements providing assurance to deploying agencies and OEMs of trusted communications equipment.

OmniAir launched its first testing and certification program for DSRC V2X devices in 2017.  This new certification program builds on this strong foundation of comprehensive testing. OmniAir’s certification program scope has over 300 validated test cases based on the following standards:

  • 3GPP 36-521 & 36-523 (R14)
    Radio Transmissions and Receptions
  • SAE J3161/1:2020
    OBU LTE-V2X Communications
  • IEEE 1609.2:2017, 2a & 2b:2019
    Security Services
  • IEEE 1609.2.1(CAMP):2020
    SCMS and Certificates
  • IEEE 1609.3:2020
    Network Services
  • SAE J2735:2020
    Message Decoding
  • SAE J3161/1A:2021 (Adapted from J2945/1A Modified)
BSM (V2V) Minimum Performance, Location Field Accuracy
  • SAE J3161/1 & /1A:2021 (Adapted from J2945/1)

OmniAir Consortium was founded nearly 15 years ago with the express purpose of promoting certification and interoperability for intelligent transportation systems.  OmniAir and its members have worked collaboratively with transportation stakeholders to develop requirements and specifications for both RFID tolling and DSRC-based connected vehicle devices, and now C-V2X connected vehicle devices. OmniAir has certified RFID tags and readers used in electronic toll collection systems since 2012, DSRC for connected vehicles since 2017 and C-V2X connected vehicle devices in 2021.

OmniAir Consortium and OmniAir member, Danlaw, Inc. will host the OmniAir Michigan Plugfest the week of June 14- 18 in Novi, MI.  Bench testing will be conducted at the Danlaw headquarters June 14 – 16 with field testing taking place at the Mcity Test Facility June 17 – 18 in nearby Ann Arbor.  Plugfest events provide a unique opportunity for manufacturers interested in OmniAir certification to run-through the new test cases and evaluate device readiness.  Register via Eventbrite, or contact  Ryan Hall for more details.
