OmniAir Urges FCC to Preserve Full 5.9 GHz Spectrum for Transportation Safety
In comments filed today, OmniAir Consortium®, the leading industry association promoting interoperability and certification for ITS, tolling, and connected vehicles today urged the Federal Communications Commission to preserve the availability of the full 75 MHz in the 5.9 GHz Band for current and future transportation safety applications.
Regardless of the wireless technology deployed in the band for V2X services, it is critical that the FCC preserve sufficient reliable and secure spectrum for these life-saving services.
OmniAir® recognizes that any Commission decision regarding the amount and location of available spectrum in the 5.9 GHz Band currently allocated to V2X communications will impact the deployment and availability of these critical transportation safety applications in the United States.
The European Union, Canada, South Korea, Australia and Japan have set their V2X spectrum allocations (including for future developments) at a minimum of 70 MHz. Trying to squeeze this life-saving technology into a meager 30 MHz, is not sufficient, is not in the public interest, and could damage America’s economic competitiveness.
Further, the Commission’s proposal to allocate the lower 45 MHz of spectrum for unlicensed devices adjacent to the proposed V2X spectrum raises the potential for harmful out-of-band emissions, that would likely interfere with safety critical V2X communications.
“Both DSRC and C-V2X connected vehicle technologies have the potential to significantly reduce fatalities and injuries on our roadways,” said Jason Conley, Executive Director for OmniAir. “The Commission should act to ensure that there is sufficient spectrum for current and future V2X use cases. 30 MHz of spectrum is simply not enough.”
OmniAir has implemented and is currently operating the only interoperability and conformance certification testing program for Vehicle-to-Everything (“V2X”) radio devices operating in the 5.9 GHz Band to provide “trusted communications” for transportation.
OmniAir and its members are developing the world’s first and only comprehensive certification program for C-V2X devices, for launch later this year.

Update on OmniAir Lone Star Plugfest
Twice a year, OmniAir looks forward to hosting our members from around the world at our OmniAir Plugfests. These events provide an unparalleled opportunity for V2X device manufacturers to engage in week-long interoperability, conformance, and security testing with leading test labs and test equipment providers from around the world.
However, considering the current Coronavirus/COVD-19 outbreak, we are postponing our OmniAir Lone Star Plugfest, which had been scheduled for the week of April 27-May 1 in Austin, TX.
OmniAir Consortium’s top priority is to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of our members, attendees, and staff. In consultation with our event partners and given the developing and evolving nature of the COVID-19/Coronavirus outbreak, we have decided that postponing the event is the correct course of action.
Like the Connected Vehicle industry itself, OmniAir is a global organization. Our members come from over 26 countries around the world. Over 50% of OmniAir’s members are based outside of North America. We take our responsibility to ensure the health and safety of this community seriously.
OmniAir is working with event partners to set a new date for the OmniAir Lone Star Plugfest, with a target for this summer. We will announce new date within the next two weeks. Please consult our website www.omniair.org for further updates.
We are grateful to our members and partners who have invested time and money to support this event. Thank you for your understanding.
We look forward to seeing all of you this summer.
Sincerely,
Jason M. Conley
Executive Director

DriveOhio Joins OmniAir Consortium
DriveOhio, an initiative of the Ohio Department of Transportation, and a statewide center for advancing smart mobility solutions, has joined OmniAir Consortium®.
Ohio is home to dozens of public and private entities involved in the design, development, testing, use, and regulation of autonomous and connected technologies. DriveOhio brings all of these organizations together under one umbrella, serving as the hub for all things autonomous and connected in Ohio.
DriveOhio also works to ensure Ohio’s regulatory environment and public policies are conducive to the development of the infrastructure and technologies needed for smart mobility. Instead of asking companies to work simultaneously with multiple agencies, DriveOhio is a one-stop-shop for those developing, testing and deploying advanced mobility solutions in Ohio.
“DriveOhio’s commitment to the testing and deployment of connected and self-driving technologies is impressive.” said Jason Conley, Executive Director for OmniAir®. “DriveOhio’s innovative approach is one of the reasons Ohio is recognized as a national leader in transportation innovation. We look forward to working together to help advance OmniAir’s testing and certification programs for V2X.”
Formed in 2018, DriveOhio was recently re-authorized by an executive order signed by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, as the statewide center for smart mobility solutions. Ohio currently has six designated “smart” projects aimed at testing real-world autonomous and connected technologies, with more on the way.
- The 33 Smart Mobility Corridor
- I-670 SmartLane
- Connected Marysville
- Self-Driving Shuttle on Scioto Mile
- I-90 Lake Effect Corridor
- Youngstown SMART2 Network
